Ohio Divorce; Getting Your Name Back
If you are seeking to have your name changed back to your maiden name following an Ohio divorce or dissolution proceeding, you will want to let your attorney know before the proceedings are initiated. Your divorce attorney will file a motion requesting that your name be restored. When the divorce/dissolution case is concluded, the Court will issue an entry that restores your name. Make sure to ask your attorney to provide you with at least two certified copies of this entry. A certified copy of that Court order can then be used to change the name with the Social Security Administration, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, banks, 401k accounts, voter registration and any other institution you regularly do business with. We recommend that you make an appointment with the Social Security Office to obtain a new social security card. After you have a newly issued social security card (visit here for a step by step guide), your next stop should be the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. At each stage we recommend you visit the website of the agency to determine what documents you will need to finalize the name change.
